Flower Girl #4

Friday, April 29, saw my sleep-deprived self hanging the above framed painting for the "Family Guy" art show, themed The Art of the Ad. It marked the first time I had completed a traditional painting in over eight years, and the journey was certainly no cakewalk. Painting with acrylics was not as easy as I had remembered, and mistakes were made, bad enough to merit a second trip to Blick for a new canvas. Good and bad news abounded from this particular flub. The good news was that I still had time to finish the painting. The bad news was that I had to put my freelance work with Leaf Trading Cards on hold in order to do it, which, by the way, was completed yesterday and looks great. A post on that will be in order as soon as I'm given a heads-up from them to share that work on here.

My piece pays homage to a vintage advertisement on Liebig Extract of Meat, a highly-concentrated meat stock that was used to make soup in the olden days, as you can see in the comparison below:

Credit for the Liebig card belongs to Flickr user cigcardpix, whose photostream consists entirely of vintage ads of the trading card variety. According to him, the title of the card is "Liebig S133 - Flower Girls 1883 #4." Hence, the title of my piece, "Flower Girl #4."

Originally, I wanted Lois to figure in the painting, but as I had done a piece on her in a previous show, I decided to take the less-traveled route and use Meg instead. Both Meg, or her skin to be precise, and the Liebig jar took the longest to paint. For the finer details on the jar, I utilized Prismacolor markers, as experiments with the smallest brush I owned proved fruitless.

Something completely different

I heavily debated whether or not to put this up here for a few reasons, one of them being the possibility of scaring my supposed male audience away with its unabashed gayness. But after having my friend Jeremy Polgar parade it around to some of the artists at Titmouse, where it was received with a mix of amusement and obvious confusion, I figured what the hay? Into the blog she goes.

The hilarity of this being shared with the artists at Titmouse comes not only from its devastatingly homoerotic nature, but its relevance, considering this is a fan piece of one of their shows: "Metalocalypse," the greatest TV show OF ALL TIME. Of course, I'm exaggerating, but I am being very honest when I tell you this is currently my favorite TV show. I own all three seasons, as well as the second Dethklok album, and have even attended one of their concerts. Toki is my favorite cartoon character in general, so it was a dream come true meeting Tommy Blacha, have him do the voice of Toki for me, and get a picture with him during one of my visits to the studio last year.

No one was lying when they told me he was a nice guy. He's definitely one of the most personable industry bigwigs that I've met so far. But I digress.

So, yeah... I like "Metalocalypse" slash. This isn't anything new for me. I've been drawing slash works for a few years now, posting some of them onto my soon-to-be-deleted art journal on Livejournal. In fact, this was originally posted on LJ for user nawazarrio for the 2011 Hearts & Guts "Metalocalypse" gift exchange. Waz requested Nathan/Pickles with brownie points to the artist if they could make "Pickles being... broken and [wanting] someone to lean on," and I could only oblige.

Well, that answers the biggest question among the Titmouse artists regarding my submission: Why is Pickles crying? Not that they really cared so much about getting the answer to that one, haha!

Draw Off #26: Sexy Ladies

Well, just one sexy lady right now: Orihime from "Bleach." Drawn and colored in Toon Boom Storyboard Pro. The coloring process was a poor attempt at speed painting within a 30 minute time span. Heh, fat chance! It took me 3 hours to complete, though I'll have to forgive myself for this; most of that time was spent on experimenting with the software's limited brush and color palette, as, prior to this, I had never gone beyond painting in black and white with the program.

Hopefully, we'll be able to see more of these from me before the Draw Off's March 25 deadline.

Summer Superhero Art Show submission

Today is the Summer Superhero Art Show here at Fox TV Animation. As usual, I'm a participant. Aside from that, though, there are a lot of amazing pieces in this one. For the first time, I'm actually bidding for a few, one of them being a "Watchmen"/"Family Guy" piece by Mick Cassidy that I probably won't get because I suspect the bidding competition for it will be fierce.

My submission features Torunn from "Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow," a straight-to-DVD movie that I freelanced on back in '07. It was originally done as practice for the show on Tegaki E. But as I found myself still working on it after a few weeks had passed, I figured that it would make a great submission for the show. When the tegaki was finished, a backwards look at a test print revealed errors that I was not aware of while I was working on it. As a result, Photoshop was used to fix these errors.

There are four different versions of this work, the original being the flawed tegaki that I'm too ashamed to post here. But if you must look, you can find it here. Of the three Photoshop passes, this first one is my favorite:

What I love most about it are the purple hues of the sky and clouds, which isn't as apparent in the final pass. Yet I chose to submit the latter because of a second opinion from my co-worker Dante, who pointed out that it had better contrast, and I feel that it's a more accurate depiction of sunset. Or maybe twilight? Not too sure.

Unfinished: Little Miss Broken 21

Despite the obviously unfinished look of this painting, I am happy with the way it turned out. The painting is of a photograph by DeviantArt user hakanphotography, titled "Little Miss Broken 21," which you can find here. I chose it for its well-dressed subject (girl who likes to draw girls here!), and the way the light plays off the woman's shoulder and the leaves in the background - actually, there had to be bits of green in the picture, otherwise I wouldn't have gone for it; green is my favorite color.

I've had this sitting for months, saved and unpublished, over at my blog on Tegaki E before I decided to drop the ax on it earlier today. Reasons behind this decision stemmed from the difficulty level of the project, lack of resources and interest, and bad timing. Coloring is most certainly not my forte, and the first time I had to paint in a realistic manner, I had to do it on Tegaki E of all places! Everything on one layer with practically zero of the conveniences that Photoshop and Corel offer.

Other roadblocks occurred when my PC died, which still has yet to be replaced, leaving me with only the Cintiq I have at work, where downtime is few and far between (and, anyway, when your job is drawing on a bright screen all day, the idea of giving your eyes a rest at the first opportunity seems very appealing, doesn't it?). Then the studio blocked DeviantArt, which is really ironic if you think about it.

Fast forward to today: I had a bit of downtime, but just as I was about to begin painting again, I remembered the latter, and thought, "Screw it!" Entry submitted. I figured that it's time for something new, anyway.

"Family Guy" art show comic

On Friday, June 12, I submitted the above comic for the "Family Guy" art show, themed Great Moments in History. The strip was a collaborative effort between me and my friend, Andrew Dowis. Andrew was the first and only person that came to mind for writing for my submission, since his sense of humor practically mirrors that of the show. That, and I knew I wouldn't be able to pull off any sort of joke that would feel even remotely "Family Guy"-ish. Not to say that I don't have a sense of humor, but my jokes (if you can even call them that) tend to be more on the innocent and playful, or even disturbing, side.

The strip sold for $100, which was obviously freakin' sweet for the both of us. And Andrew was so pleased with how the comic turned out that he decided to color it:

Coloring completed two days ago with Photoshop. Other materials used were Col-Erase blue pencil and Copic pen on Japanese comic book paper. I can't stress enough how much Copic pens rule. Seriously. They're awesome.

Figure sketches

Last month, I got back in the figure drawing game after three years of absence from either classes or sessions. Gotta hand it to Fox TV Animation for holding sessions every other Wednesday. They're really a lot of fun to attend. Two hours of figure drawing in the "American Dad" conference room minus registration fees and the like. What could be better?

The sketches I've done so far from these sessions suck, though. Not a surprise, considering how long it's been since I've done figure drawing on a regular basis. So instead, I'm just going to share three pages from my current sketchbook. These drawings were done during my free time at work using references from photos on DeviantArt.

This morning at work was slow, as most of it was spent waiting for Peter Shin, one of the supervising directors on "Family Guy," to prepare the work that I'm currently doing for his show. The wait wasn't boring, though, as I used it to fool around on Tegaki E. The result? A little something for kirayumi, a Livejournal community co-modded by yours truly for Kira and Yumichika of "Bleach." I seem to be getting better at this, I think.

Yoko x Yoko

Does anyone here have an easy time drawing people kissing? Because I don't, and it's really sad. And this drawing? Well, it's the first time I've ever drawn people kissing in a more serious and professional manner, so forgive me if this thing is made of fail. As Charles Kettering once said, "One fails forward toward success." I'll get it right someday.

This drawing is my second submission for Draw Off #16: Gainax. As it turned out, the deadline for #16 was extended to until #17 is announced, whenever that may be. "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" is once again the anime of choice, and Yoko is the subject, femslashed with...herself. It is based off the beautiful drawing of two Nurse Yokos in the "Gurren Lagann: Yoko Portraits" art book.

To be colored at a later time. Honestly, I'm not in much of a coloring mood these days, so we'll probably be seeing sketches and cleanups from me for a while.

Draw Off #16: Gainax

My friends Kalia Cheng and Matt Bordenave like to participate in these drawing challenges dubbed the Draw Offs, where the resulting artwork must relate to a theme chosen for that particular Draw Off. This is my first time participating in the challenge.

The theme this time around is Gainax, chosen by yours truly. For my submission, we have Nia Teppelin from "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann," an anime series that I haven't seen, but find inspirational with its character designs and talented fan following. Originally, I wanted to post this drawing up after I had completed the background (yes, there's a background that goes with this) and the coloring of, but to be honest, I've lost interest in it. And by that, I mean for completing it by this Wednesday's deadline. I know, I suck. But we'll get to seeing a completed version of this someday.

"Hammerfist" emerges victorious!

On Sunday, March 1, I received news that "David Hammerfist: Hammerfists of Fury" won the Audience Award for Best Animated film at the Beverly Hills Shorts Festival. Being a fan of the film, I was ecstatic to hear this, and felt the muses kicking in for some congratulatory fanart. So here's to the guys of Hammerfist Productions on their awesome win!

On another note, no pencils or pens were used in the making of this drawing. Everything was done in Photoshop with a Wacom tablet, which is a first for me. It pleases me to see that my skills with the program are improving.

CLAMP fare

OHAY GUYS, YOU KNOW ABOUT THE PEN TOOL!? You know, that tool that a large population of newbie Photoshoppers seem to have nightmares over!? The one whose twin tweaking thingamajigs that pop up when you click an anchor point make you want to slit your wrists and gouge your eyes out!? Well, for the first time ever, I successfully utilized that baby, and, boy, was it a doozy! Two days. Two days spent adding, deleting, and tweaking anchor points on that crazy mannequin. Thank God for video tutorials like this, or I would've given up on what is supposedly the perfect tool for this sort of thing altogether. Oh, Alt key, I love you!

So here we have Subaru and Hokuto Sumeragi from "Tokyo Babylon," a manga series that I'm not particularly fond of, yet the art and OVAs seriously rock hard in my opinion. This piece is based off one of my favorite drawings from the "Tokyo Babylon Photographs" art book. I had a lot of fun working on this, as it was done simply for pleasure (FOR ONCE!!!), which is such a refreshing break from commercial, work-related art. Or birthday cards. Don't misunderstand. I love doing them, but they can't always be the only things I draw in my spare time.

Fanart mood

I felt like drawing some fanart today, so I settled on drawing characters from Matt Bordenave's upcoming senior thesis. I don't know much about it, save for the fact that it's a sword fight, so I thought I'd draw his characters posing with swords. I'm seriously praying to God that I didn't just butcher the guy's characters. I mean, this stuff looks good to me so far, but then, I'm also really tired. Don't you hate that? How you think something looks good to you one day, only to find the next day that the work's a piece of [insert expletive here]? Well, I don't know about you, but I do.

The final version of the sketch featuring me, Matt Bordenave, and Stu Fullerton. I completed this thing way back in October, but refused to post it until I had changed a few things. Unfortunately, I had other work on my hands, and I ended up forgetting about this piece entirely. While this drawing could use more work, I'm just going to post it up, anyway, since it at least shows some improvement in regards to my Photoshop skills. Here, we can see that I've started messing with textures. Textures are amazing, folks. Freakin' use them!

Orihime Inoue

I honestly hate the sight of unfinished works on my blog, but then...if I was to wait until all my stuff was finished to post, then updates would be super infrequent. And I don't like that much, either. So here's a sketch of my favorite "Bleach" character, Orihime Inoue. Originally, I wanted to color this, but sitting in front of a computer for hours on end is really the last thing I want to be doing right now. My eyes are killing me, and, anyway, I've got a ton of storyboarding work to do. Thank you, God, that I don't have to be doing that digitally at the moment, or I just may go blind!

I have no clue as to whether or not this sketch is made of win or massive fail. I blame the lack of sleep. Normally, I would abstain from posting unfinished works on here, but it's been a while since I've posted, and I feel bad when the blog gets neglected. At least now we know what my stuff looks like before it's all cleaned up and colored.

So this here sketch is of me with Matt Bordenave and Stu Fullerton, my two favorite guys from the class of '09. They've been waiting an eternity for me to finish up a drawing of them, and it wasn't until yesterday that the inspiration and motivation to draw them hit. Hopefully, the muses will stick around for a bit because I've got a few drawings in mind that I know they'd get a kick out of.

Title explains all. Me and Elaine, in a drawing inspired by a photo I saw in the current issue of "Indie: The Independent Style Magazine." The original photo was of two women posing and dressed in pretty much the same way. Except they didn't have their hands up, holding lollipops. That part was totally my idea - WHEE!

I know that this could look so much better. It's just too bad that I don't have all the time in the world to devote to it. Not to mention I'm still new to the business of coloring things digitally, and, so far, none of my works in Photoshop have turned out the way I originally pictured them in my mind. Sometimes that's a good thing, and other times, it isn't. But I think that with this piece, it's not too bad.

Animal sketches

On the 12th of last month, I went to the L.A. Zoo with Elaine to sketch animals. It was a lot of fun, despite the hot sun pouring down on us. I have to admit I nearly passed out at the emperor tamarin enclosure (I'm a wuss, I know). The most interesting parts about the experience were the people who would stop to watch us as we drew. Elaine and I even received a request from a man named Jesse to make a birthday drawing of him and his sister, Brianna, which we accepted at no charge. They were pleased with the drawings, but, of course, Elaine and I were still nervous about the results - you know, the whole "you are your own worst critic" deal.

Below are some of the sketch pages, in the order that I drew them. I seriously need access to a bigger scanner because I did my sketches on 9x12 paper, and I had to scrap at least two pages for this post, as they were horribly cropped.

Oh, my God...these birthday posts are gonna kill me! Stop having birthdays, people! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!

Once again, late birthday present is late. I am so made of fail this week...

So yesterday was Carol Easter's birthday. Carol is an animation girl who loves "Jem," K-dramas, Hiroshi Abe, and acting like a 5-year-old whenever possible. She is also one of the most unforgettable people you will ever meet. The proof is in the vast army of loyal fans who swoon about her every so often, that someone standing outside of it would probably find themselves wishing they could be just as cool as her. Animation junior-to-be Marnie Brumder is one of these people. I swear, that girl loves Carol so much, she'd do everything in her power to have Carol meet Jem, if Jem actually existed.

With that thought, I was inspired to make the following storyboard:

"Hammerfist" creator turns 23

Late birthday present is late! My God, that is so not made of win...

So on Saturday, July 19, Matthew Mahoney of Hammerfist Productions celebrated his 23rd birthday. In his honor, I drew up a ton of "Hammerfist" fanart and the drawing you see above, which is supposed to be of him and me, the way we looked back in the spring of '05 - the good old days, because we were a lot closer during that time.

Anyway, I have to cut this entry short because I have to get back to storyboarding for work and my own personal enrichment. Here's three out of an insane amount of "Hammerfist" fanart that I pounded out on Friday and Saturday. Cleaned up and colored versions of these images will be posted up at a later time.

Josh and Monica

This drawing was inspired by a cute little moment between Franz's little sister Monica, and his friend Josh Goldman. What happened was we - that is, me, Josh, J.J., and Franz's friend David Rosen - were hanging out at Franz's house, watching "Hellboy," in preparation for the midnight showing of the sequel. Josh wasn't too much of a participant, as he was busy dressing up as the main character. Well, he ran into a problem when he realized the skin dye he was using wouldn't stick. J.J. suggested that he use baby powder to fix this, so Josh went looking for Monica, probably because he figured that her being a girl meant that she was stashing stuff like that.

When I heard Monica scream, I looked up to see both her and Josh standing in the hall outside the media room. The scene was hilarious, with Josh being all apologetic and Monica having this confused expression on her face. To me, it was like an imbalance of power - or maybe more like a situation where no one is in control. I mean, you got this big, tough-looking guy acting all nervous around a little girl. I knew that moment needed to be drawn.

I'm proud of the Monica sketch, but I have a few problems with the one on Josh. For one thing, I suck at drawing men, so the whole process of teaching myself to draw the guy was painful. When I finally finished the pictured sketch, I felt that I had nailed it. But upon second glance, I thought, "Dagnabbit! This doesn't look like Josh. This looks more like...Ron Livingston!!!" I've posted it up, though, since the man actually looks manly, not androgynous or pretty-boy anime-ish as most of my men tend to turn out - UGH!!!

Today is friend and fellow animator Lis Savic's birthday. A little about Lis: she's an LMU animation sophomore-to-be, who is dedicated heavily to her craft. In her spare time, she likes to go adventuring, write about her dreams and thoughts, and read fantasy novels and manga, among them being "Tsubasa: RESERvoir CHRoNiCLE." The latter explains why I have her drawn in how I think CLAMP would draw her, dressed in one of Fay D. Flourite's outfits - though I think I probably should have made her limbs longer, since those dang CLAMP ladies like to draw their characters so insanely tall it doesn't look right at times.

Oh...no offense, CLAMP lovers! I'm a fan, too! I collect their art books like crazy!

As the title states, there's more birthday art on the way because not only are more people's birthdays coming up, two people's birthdays have already passed. Geez, I'm so insanely late on this one guy's drawing, I'm wondering whether I should consider it a birthday present anymore...

Well, whatever. The fool will love it, or I'll kill him!

Memory of Hartmann's class

In the first semester of my senior year at LMU, I took Rupert Hartmann's class on the business of the music industry. The class was boring as hell at times, but it was all cool, considering the lack of homework assignments and the abundance of friends in attendance. Among them were the guys pictured. Yeah, that's my ex-roommate A.J. again. The other guy is Franz Schmutzer, a film production student that I met through fellow animator J.J. Conway of Hammerfist Productions. You may recognize him from the old, long-deleted "Sombrero Boy" posts on "Lunchtime in Hell," fictional conversations between Franz and Satan (note for the curious: I'll be posting up "Lunchtime in Hell" art at a later time).

Back to the drawing now, it depicts one of the few times that the three of us sat together during Hartmann's class. I see it as a family portrait in some ways, since the three of us are half-white/Filipino and that we sometimes call each other by sibling titles (i.e. "little bro," "sort-of brother," "Ate"). It marks my fourth attempt at coloring in Photoshop, and while I'm not as pleased with it as the "No pregnant women allowed!" piece, well...hey! It's still progress!

If any of you guys are thinking that I'm advertising a method of birth control on this blog, you're wrong. The drawing's supposed to be a silly little moment that my ex-roommate A.J. and I had while we were living together. I remember hanging around the kitchen area, when I heard A.J. laughing from the living room. I asked him what was so funny, and he came to me with the pictured sign. For him, it was like saying, "No pregnant women allowed!" We both got a good laugh out of this interpretation.

This drawing marks my third attempt at coloring in Photoshop, and thanks to my ex-boyfriend Andrew's advice, the third time ended up being the charm. I'm so pleased with the results, that I'm already thinking of other drawings that I could give that old-timey, grainy-photo touch to. Actually, I've got one in the works right now, so stay tuned!

Saturday, March 29, saw me at the 24th birthday celebration of animation maestro, Jeremy Polgar. The party was a blast, complete with good people, delicious frozen beverages, the biggest pinata I'd ever seen, and a crazed Jeremy running around with cake - even though the latter nearly had most of us making a run for the door. It was fun being able to talk to LMU people that I hadn't seen for a while. I also got to talk to a few of the artists I met at Titmouse a few weeks back. If plans don't fall through, I'll be learning Japanese from Junpei Takayama, haha!

Eh, probably not...but, hey, it's a connection!

Obviously, I made the drawing above as a birthday gift to Jeremy. It's supposed to be a picture of him and his girlfriend, Felicia. I was happy to know that Jeremy and Felicia both loved it. And in case any of you guys are thinking, "Boy, his arm is sure long," I did that on purpose. Like the way the animators did it for the "Tiny Toons" and "Animaniacs." Jeremy said for me not to sweat it, but it's hard not to be a little self-conscious, no thanks to my boyfriend making the above arm quote.

To be honest, I like the sketch more than the cleanup. There's just something really cool about those thought process lines.

And speaking of sketches, Matt Bordenave did a quick portrait of me at the party. I'm so complimented, I just have to put it up here. Matt thinks it doesn't look like me, but I think it does. Well, maybe a hotter, lethal version of me, but why should I be complaining about that? So cheers to Matt and his awesome drawing skills!
